OBS desktop audio and usb microphone capture incompatibility?

I am trying to add an external USB microphone to my OBS window/system audio capture setup for game streaming. Without the mic it works fine, but when I try to introduce a mic into the setup it works for a while but then the system audio eventually stops working, even if I turn off or entirely disconnect the usb mic or disable the aux/mic input capture in OBS. If I give it some time the system audio capture seems to come back. This is obviously very frustrating. What can I do? Is there some fundamental incompatibility? In the past I used my Mac's built-in mic for audio input capture but that was a less than ideal setup and now with my new Mac that isn't do-able any more, thus the external mic. Listed below is all the relevent info I could compile. The mic works just fine with all other apps and is a cheap generic thing without drivers.

PS: Oh and when OBS won't record system audio the Audio Mixer indicator shows activity on that source but won't record it. Odd.
PPS: And if the mic (appears to) scrambles the system audio I have to restart MacOS (along with OPS and everything else) to get system audio back.
PPPS: Now system audio is back. I plug the mic back in and set up OBS to capture it. Just fine. I think if I wait a while it'll interfere and OBS will audio capture generally will go down.

Next stream is tomorrow (Sunday) afternoon. Guess so mic going forward.

Mac OS 13.3.1 Ventura
OBS 29.0.2
Blackhole installed
Audio Mini Setup device "OBS Audio Output" with Blackhole 2ch and External Headphones checked
OBS Audio Output Capture source called "Desktop Audio", properties > device: Blackhole 2ch
System Settings > Sound > Output & Input > Output : OBS Audio Output
