OBS CPU>40% - choppy video footage

hey all! have a q for you for anyone doing streaming~ i am part of a live digital show where i'm running two cameras into a canopus into my mac. i run OBS and connect a virtual cam through zoom. last night my OBS started using 30-40% of my cpu and the live video feed became extremely choppy. when i'd just connect and stream the cam via zoom without OBS it would be running totally fine, but OBS would not work.

does anyone know if there's a solution to this? i was thinking maybe i could get an external SSD (or raspberry pi?) and run obs and zoom on there, but i imagine it would still be needing to use the graphics card from my main mac and take up a lot of computing power. this is unchartered territory for me - does anyone have any resources or forums to direct me to? thanks in advance. it was also extremelyyy hot in my attic so it may be related to the heat? thank you thank you!
