OBS 31 is crashing and unusable.

I updated to the long awaited OBS 31 earlier today and I cannot use it without it crashing.

I installed using the Widows installer .exe but it kept stalling telling me that Nvidia Broadcast and Edge were causing conflicts so I eventually uninstalled both programs to get OBS 312 installed and the re-installed Nvidia broadcast.

At first it crashed before the UI could open, but after a couple of fresh installs and reboots I managed to open in safe mode, but there were issues in selecting my camera source and it crashed on closing.

It seems to be a little more stable with Nvidia broadcast uninstalled, but still crashes.

I have an Acer Tuff Gaming A15 laptop, Ryzen7 with Nvidia Geforce RTX 2050 and 40GB ram. Windows 11. Crashlogs below...

OBS is working fine. The plugins you have installed not.
Make sure the plugins are updated and compatible with OBS 31.

Same with the nvidia apps

All plugins are updated to the latest versions and so is Nvidia software and drivers. The crashes also happen in Safe mode when no plugins are called.

All works fine on an older laptop. Acer Aspire Core i7 with 12 gb ram, no GPU, Windows 10. But crashes persist on Acer Tuff Gaming A15 laptop, Ryzen7 with Nvidia Geforce RTX 2050 and 40GB ram. Windows 11.

All plugins are updated to the latest versions and so is Nvidia software and drivers.
Latest does NOT necessarily = compatible.. of course. These are ALL different companies/authors. And OBS Studio just released. You have to check with each Plugin author (thread) individually

To test, install a clean OBS Studio in portable mode. Use no plugins (at all), nor filters/effects (to start) and test again. If still having an issue, post that OBS Studio session and crash log, with likely Operating System and/or GPU driver being an issue (but new release, so anything possible)

Having this same issue. Just sat up a completely new computer yesterday. Fresh OBS and all fresh install of plugins. All very common and well used plugins. My question is, with OBS now having built in support for NVIDA Broadcast, do you still need to install the STKs? I did install the stks and question if this could be causing the issue.

Yeah, same here. It undid my entire config and now it crashes when I switch scene groups. This is ridiculous. And BEST OF ALL the system hangs when it puts together a crash report and I have to kill it in the task manager! If I only I had NOT updated this!

yes you still need the sdk, maybe try to redownload the proper file for your gpu. i tested the effects just few minutes after the update went live and all work good. it changed some basic settings on streaming and recoding tabs but besides that everything is good.

OBS 31... UPDATE:
IN ORDER TO GET A functioning OBS 31.

you have to either clean and install it from the website launcher
or do an admin overwrite the install: again from the obs website launcher / installer

The obs updater from with in obs corrupts some of the files.....

dont forget to defrag then reboot afterward (also check plugs)....
and check for hidden Windows updates. (just advice to keep it from breaking)

Its needs a hotfix badly. game capture broke again. its no capturing Steam-launched games examples. let it die....
crashs on capturing the game over thrown....

pretty sure this is the case with almost all obs updates.. always having semi manually install the updates UGH

I have the same issues of crashing, using R5 5600G RX6600 16GB RAM, Windows 11 with all updated plugins. It started crashing ever since updating to OBS 31 and I updated several weeks ago. I also tried reinstalling OBS manually and it did not do anything for me. One of the logs I attached has the error that NDI is a fault address, but it's the newest release of NDI that supports OBS 31.

No, you don't have the same issue. In the crash report show the obs-stroke-glow-shadow.dll plugin as the one crashing.
Remove that plugin, and any other outdated and not compatible with the OBS version you're using and try again.

After I removed the stroke-glow, I haven't seen OBS crash anymore, but OBS did black out and crashed my stream a few times but did not crash the program itself at some instances when I tried to test via streaming. there might be another tool that is incompatible with v31 but it hasn't made OBS crash yet.

What you describe looks like another plugin causing it. Or GPU driver. Or the GPU itself. Or ... you get it.
Please take a look at all the pinned posts on this forum.

Well it couldn't be the GPU, this only happens if I have OBS open with or without it streaming. I do have an AMD (RX6600) but I haven't heard of incompatibilities with AMD Cards. If in any case OBS decides to crash my stream AND game, but did not crash itself, what do I need to see in the logs? It JUST happened while just trying to have OBS open while playing a game. Issue popped up at 12:0x am

Too many plugins that may be causing issues:

The obs-stroke-glow-shadow plugin is still there.
You need to check on each plugin page if there's an update and if it's compatible with the OBS version you're using.

As you can see at the very end of the log file, there are memory leaks caused by one or multiple plugins which may lead to issues.
00:04:39.636: Number of memory leaks: 65

For testing purposes, install OBS in portable mode: https://obsproject.com/forum/resources/obs-and-obs-studio-portable-mode-on-windows.359/
Test it as is, without any plugin. Create a scene and add one source.

Also make sure you have the latest GPU driver. Do not use the windows updater for this drivers, go to the AMD site and get the latest one.

I decided to just reinstall OBS entirely after uninstalling lol.
Okay something's up. It still manages to freeze everything occasionally with the same symptoms even after a fresh reinstall of OBS. Here's what I see whenever it happens: The chat window in OBS Blacks out, game freezes (or crashes), VTuber loses connection with my webcam and stops tracking my face, sometimes my microphone gets disabled too so I have to disable/enable it back up so I can use my microphone again. And sometimes it either keeps my stream running or crashes my stream. The only plugins I installed were: Move transition, Spout 2, Output Timer, and the rest are just sources I added.

Update: it still crashes randomly even with a fresh install of plugins:
-Elgato Stream Deck
-Output Timer
-Spout2
And the rest are just overlays.

It ends up showing "encoding error"

I'm using AMD's H264 encoder still

Then you know one or a combination of this plugins are causing OBS to crash. Remove the plugin that causes it and you'll be fine.
How to know which plugin is? Add one by one and test it in between. Once you get a crash, that's the one.

Spout wasn't updated since 2021. I'm guessing this is the one causing the issues. There are other plugins that do similar things and are updated.
move-transition is present. If you're not using it, remove it.

As always, review and follow directions and recommendations on the analyzer:
