OBS 30.2.3 - Sound Distortions and Static - App Audio Cap [ Beta ]

So, As the title has said, Lately I've been doing some recodings for my youtube channel and have been getting a lot of these random Sound distortions and static in my recordings.

Now to clearifiy - This does not effect my gameplay or while im recording. I do no hear these distortions or static while playing / recording. This only is noticeable AFTER I watch the recording either in VLC, Windows Movie player, or in Sony Vegas while Editing.

Let's start with the Video to show you what I mean.
This was a mild case of the issue, Sometimes it's much much worse and lasts way longer. But once it's over everything it fine. Now this isn't just a Monster Hunter game issue it's happening in everything I record. Desktop, other Games like World of Warcraft, Dragon's Dogma, Dark Souls, etc, etc..

Now here are my settings for my PC Sound and Recording + My OBS 30.2.3 Settings.

Some help here would be great, Because I've even went back to Version 28 with OBS to fix this and it still happens. I've also tried to used desktop recoding, Audio output recording. the 2.33 Win Capture [ Beta ] .. I've reinstalled window 10 completely recently a so its a clean install with everything updated. My Nvidia Geforce RTX 2070 Super 8GB has the latest drivers.

I just know this wasn't an issue a while ago now it is and it's kinda messing with my plans lol, so if anyone has anymore information on this issue please let me know! Would love to get this fixed so I can start working on my projects. :) Ty

I think, you run into issue known as:
It seems that this is OS bug. Probably, will be fixed with some update from Microsoft, soon...........
Oh okay, it's just super annoying and I was worried that it might be a OBS or more importantly a PC issue on my end but fix after fix test after test. I coudn't find anything wrong on my end. Thanks for the information, guess the only thing I can do is wait. :)

So, I posted this up in September and wondering if there's been any word on OBS fixing this issues with Static in the Audio on recordings. Seem's it's still a problem and it's getting annoying. I can't really record many videos if I can't rely on my recordings coming out with audio issues 80% of the time. Here's a recent recording of what I'm talking about I just recorded today.

1. Gameplay was stable, I didn't Hear this while Recording or Playing. I only hear this static while its in post in Vegas Pro while editing.

Using, Win 10 home 64 bit. OBS 30.2.3 Version, I'm using the old Win Capture Audio 2.2.3 [beta] method, but still this is happens with the Application Audio Capture (Beta) as well.

Seriously a fix to this would be nice so I could get back to making videos without issues.

I've also tried the 2.83 Realtek Audio Driver updates, Voicemeeter Banana, So many Windows setting combonations, Front and Back Audio jacks, Changing the audio quality to higher Hrtz and lower DVD, Studio. I mean If there was a fix I've tried it and still no solution, The next option I can think of is getting a Sound Card.. but I shouldn't have to spend money on something like that because I don't believe its my PC that's the issue.

Any help here would be great.

You didn't read related thread about the issue? Here is most important info from it:

...Microsoft has implemented a potential fix for this issue that is targeted for Windows 11 24H2. In our testing, the fix resolved the issue.
Windows 11 24H2 is what you need first. Or forget about the sound separation feature at all.

@Suslik V - Guess I missed that part. Well, My Motherboard can't run windows 11 since it's old, Doesn't have a UEFI Boot Option that windows 11 needs. Running a EVGA Classified 3 X58 motherboard. So guess im stuck with this freaking bug till I can afford to buy a new Motherboard and CPU. Windows 10 support ends Oct 2025, hope things turn around for me soon. This stinks just wish microsoft would patch win 10 :(

not that I'm advising it... but there are ways around the hardware restrictions to install Win11....
I'm sticking with Win10 for now, and don't use this known WinOS audio bug/limitations that has been known abut for YEARS [which happens to negatively impact this OBS Studio feature]... fortunately, this doesn't impact me in my use case

I have numerous PCs and workstation that aren't natively supported on Win11.. most likely I'll be converting them to Linux, as those machines are otherwise fine and usable for browsing, email, Office type apps..

Relevant XKCD:

Anyway, I've been running Linux in some form or another since the college activists gave me a free CD of the then-current version of Ubuntu. Always dual-booted with whatever Windows came with a new PC, sometimes Windows primary and sometimes Linux primary. But when my Win10 refused to update - it would try and then roll back, try again and roll back again, ad infinitum - I went to Linux exclusively.

And like the comic says, casual use can be anything, and it doesn't matter at all. Once you've used something else though, it does become pretty clear that Windoze is actually NOT designed for media production! It's designed for a corporate office, and casual home use is a pared-down subset of that. Gaming is also an add-on in response to so many people already having it and "just wanting to play". Media production on Windoze is actually the most hacky under the hood that I've seen. Mac and Linux are both better.

Media Production will always be "hacky" from a layman's perspective, just because of the technical knowledge required to tell the machine what you actually want. But it seems like Windows tries especially hard to hide that and "be smart"...and fails miserably at both. So then you need to dig deep in the settings, where it's pretty clear that a casual bumbler is not supposed to go, to turn off the smarts.

I've also seen a lot of comments to the effect of Micro$haft creating a TON of new Linux users anyway, with the way they're trying to force Win11 and its baked-in spyware...

@AaronD - Thanks , ya I had a friend that was going to college yeeears ago that was heavy into Ubuntu and linux. I never really considered trying a dual boot option for a fix, Might look into it.

Today tho, I went googling around for a OBS alternative and installed Streamlabs OBS. Streamlabs OBS is built apon the framing of OBS so it's not exactly the same program with a new skin ( but close to ). After the install, I recorded straight for 25 mins and didnt have a single issue with Static distortions during playback.

I'm still trying to figure out how to seperate my mic and gameplay audio with it. I'll have to do more testing to make sure it wasn't just a fluke but this seems to be the easiest fix I've found so far, Just using Streamlabs OBS instead of OBS.

Thanks for the idea on the dual boot tho! Will keep that in my back pocket incase I run out of options lol.

*Streamlabs OBS Update*

-- Doesn't matter still has the audio Static and Distortions did a 30 min recording and it started to show up at 7ish mins into the recording.

OMG this is so annoying! I recently got YouTube Partnership and hit my 1st $100 this month, so I'm trying to keep content flowing on my channel but of course something like this would happen right when things were looking up for me! UGH I have the worst luck!

There's no such a thing as streamlabs OBS. They have a product called streamlabs desktop which is based on OBS. Is not fully updated for obvious reasons.

The crackling you hear in the second video is consistent with some electrical failure. Normally this happens when you don't have a good ground connection. Also it could be due to a component failing on the sound system in the motherboard or any of the connectors, like an small tiny cable not welded correctly and is touching the ground. As the heat increases, the wire filament moves and touches the connector housing.
Many other posible problems could be causing this, including the microphone cable or the microphone itself.

Try connecting the mic on another input to the motherboard and test it. If you have another mic, test it.

lol details details, its still a OBS program just with a Streamlabs logo on it. I just figured it would be different enough to avoid the audio issues to test. 1st recording went well, but the 2nd one didn't. So, I'm back to the drawing board.

It's not a mic issue, it's gameplay Audio recordings problem . Everything works fine on my PC while I'm using other applications such as discord, programs, and games. The static you heared in the videos was only audiable after it's played back in VLC / Vegas Pro. You never hear it while recording.

I'm considering doing a windows 11 USB Bootable here soon to see if that new 24H2 patch really did fix this.

If you do go that way, I'd recommend Ubuntu Studio. It's Ubuntu, so it has all of that support, and it's designed specifically for Media Production. Low-latency kernel, and a TON of apps pre-installed and already working.

One of those apps is OBS, albeit an old version. So you'll want to add the official release channel, so that a normal system update gets you the actual current release, and then build your rig on that.

Do this in a terminal:
sudo apt-add-repository ppa:obsproject/obs-studio
Type your password (will not display anything, but it *is* accepting it)
sudo apt update
sudo apt full-upgrade -y
sudo apt autoremove -y
reboot
Then build your rig.

@AaronD - Thanks for the help!

So, I went to the Microsoft Gaming forums the other day looking around, couldn't really find anything so I made a post basically asking for a windows 10 patch ( Much like the windows 11 24H2 Patch ) I got a response back from them. Now. It's kinda of unclearn on if the patch is being worked on , been released or if he was just stating a fact there is a Update Patch for Windows 10 in general..

Not really clear on the details, But I'd think there is a patch coming for windows 10 to address the OBS static and distortion issues. Maybe you all can see a different meaning.

I also submitted to the feedback hub with all the information and link to this post for more information. Maybe I'll hear something back from the feedback soon.

Hmm... Hard to tell the difference between an overly-professional acknowledgement that really says nothing, and AI. Either way, it says nothing to me too, except to bounce you to the Feedback Hub.
