OBS 28 Virtual Camera crashes when entering or especially switching breakout rooms in Zoom

I've submitted this as an issue on Github as well (#7287) and mentioned the issue in the OBS 28 Beta forum thread, but perhaps somebody here has some ideas:

Basically, anytime I try to enter or switch breakout rooms in Zoom the OBS 28 Virtual Camera crashes. Usually it appears to freeze for a few seconds, but when I try to stop and restart the Virtual Camera, Zoom switches to a raw webcam feed and no longer shows the OBS Virtual Camera as a camera option until I quit and restart both OBS 28 and Zoom.

If there are no breakout rooms then such crashes are less consistent, but have happened. I have no issues when using OBS 27.2.4.

Attached is a log file where such a crash occured. The crash is right at the end and there doesn't appear to be much to see.

I have since retested using a completely blank profile and scene collection and the issue still happens--in fact Zoom crashed outright. Retested while using cameras other than OBS 28's Virtual Camera and Zoom worked fine so it appears to be very specific to OBS 28 and it's Virtual Camera implementation.

I'm having similar behaviour with MS Team. I've had to reinstall version 27.2.4 as the Virtual camera in version 28 kept crashing in Teams.

I'm having this issue as well. OBS 28's virtual camera crashes Mac Zoom pretty reliably, and OBS freezes up as well. It only works for a meeting or two at most and then both Zoom and OBS require a restart.

I have the same problem but I also have an issue that my Stream Deck is also "disconnecting" from OBS.

Not sure if this helps but I have also had problems with screen sharing on Zoom as it has occasionally stopped sharing other screens but this was a problem that was happening BEFORE the OBS update to 23.

It sounds like the root of the issue is pretty tricky and involves some low level API bugs on Apple's end. We're fortunate to have such capable devs working on it.
