Not recording

I'm new to this. Hooked a VCR to usb on a laptop. Followed steps as best I could, but get no video display or record function.
Any suggestions as to what I'm missing?

Not enough detail to tell anything. Do you have screenshots? A short video demonstration? A log file?

Video capture tends to be an opaque black box right around the part where the cheap things fail, so that could be a possibility too.
