I work in a high school and we have a two camera setup (Sony's - they stink) and we cannot get the cameras to display in OBS. They both are hardwired with HDMI to USB-C cabling directly into the two USB-C ports on our Mac's (newer iMacs w/out HDMI ports).
The cable you purchased (USB-C/thunderbolt to HDMI) is for connecting displays, not cameras.
You need to purchase something like the Blackmagic Ultrastudio Mini Recorder to be able to capture a video feed from cameras like the sonys you have.
