Question / Help No Idea Why I Drop Frames

I used to stream a few years ago and never dropped frames.

I have messed with the settings to try to get it to stop but it has not which is why i'm here.

I have an i7 2.6 ghz, gtx 960m, 8 gb ram, and a 1 tb hard drive.

I am running off a lap top but i'm plugged directly into the router.

I was streaming at 720p 30 fps because i'm only streaming runescape which shouldn't need much since it's not the most high tech game.

My internet should be able to handle it because i get 125 mb/s down and 25 mb/s upload.

If needed I can post a speedtest or anything that is needed to solve the problem because i'm stumped as to why it is dropping frames.

Thanks in advance for reading and have a nice day!

That thread contains pretty much everything you can do. Dropped frames mean there's a problem somewhere between you and Twitch and if you did everything listed in the thread, not much you can do after that.

I've had this same issues for almost 2 weeks now. Maybe try another streaming program like xsplit for example to see if you drop frames there? If it doesn't, then you'll know it's an issues with obs only.

I just tried it with xsplit and it seems the problem is with OBS. Maybe there is something in my settings that is causing me to drop the frames? I have no idea but I would prefer not to use xsplit to stream so if anyone has a fix then lmk.

14:08:53.853: Output 'adv_stream': Number of dropped frames due to insufficient bandwidth/connection stalls: 421 (24.8%)

Maybe you need to change Twitch server or check your network

XSplit lowers your bitrate if it would drop frames so it kind of hides the real issue by lowering the stream quality.

Not really. I've checked both connections from twitch inspector. Both with bitrate set at 3500. The Xsplit ones would occasionally go down to around 2700 which wouldn't drop frames. But the OBS ones would spike down to 1000 or less causing major frames drop then. I've also tried classic OBS with CBR disabled, there's no such dropped frames like in studio. So that's why I believe there's something buggy going on with OBS's CBR that started about 2 weeks ago. If a dev can look into the codes or something, that would be great.

............ While studio's dropped frames mechanism is different than classic, it does not drop frames unless there are some actual stalls in the network connection itself (meaning this is not the fault of studio -- it's coming from the connection itself). One thing that people don't know is that OBS classic if anything was a bit insensitive and would often buffer frames rather than stall, causing increasing delay. I can probably add some adjusters in to the program to adjust how sensitive the frame drop mechanism is, but it doesn't really change the fact that ultimately there is some stalling on the connection for whatever reason. This is not a bug or anything. It only reacts and does this when there is some actual stalling in the network connection going on. Stalling just meaning insufficient or unstable/inconsistent upload bandwidth for whatever reason.

That's actually a pretty good info from that quote there. But it's also telling me it could also be how OBS communicates with the network since another streaming program can communicate with the same network fine. And with CBR off in classic also fine, that might be something to look into too. I hope I'm not too annoying with these posts because I do want OBS to work. Been using it flawlessly for years until recently. So this really is more feedbacks IMO.

What I understad from Jim explanation is:
With OBS Classic if you use a webcam your lips and your voice will get more and more desynchronized.
With OBS Studio you will have some frame drop but your audio will be in sync,

OBS is not a product made by a company and Jim and the other programmers do their best.
You can read more about programming OBS here:

So, in my opinion frame dropping in OBS Studio it´s not so severe as it appears to be.
Anyway, you can still use Classic until OBS Studio network layer receive any kind of improvement.
