No audio signal from s-video thru USB transfer

I am trying to transfer some old Hi8 tapes using a cheap video capture gizmo (from Oassuose.) Out from the camcorder is s-video that goes to the converter and then USB to a MacBook. Audio plays from the camcorder speaker. Video shows up on OBS but no audio signal. I’ve tried various audio settings both in OBS and in the Mac system settings with no luck. Have tried Blackhole and SWB Audio Capture as intermediates but still nothing. Same issues trying to use Quicktime- video is there but no audio. Seems like the unit is plug and play for a lot of people but not in my case. Any thoughts appreciated!
 
S-Video is video only, it doesn't carry audio. You need to connect the red and white RCA audio cables from the camcorder to the capture dongle separately. Most of those cheap USB capture devices have RCA audio jacks alongside the S-Video connector. If you've already got those plugged in and it's still silent, check System Settings > Sound > Input and see if the capture device even shows up as an audio source there.
