Newbie: OBS Set-up / MAC / RANE SEVENTY

This is a bit of an embarrassing post. I'm a long-time old school DJ (viny/mixer) trying to figure this out - so am a total newbie.

I've watched a ton of YouTube videos on set-up but can't for the life of me figure out how to do a proper set-up with my gear.
ANY HELP AND I WILL BE FOREVER GRATEFUL. I'M AT A TOTAL LOSS AT THIS POINT.

I'm trying to:
1) Record mp4/mov's of my DJ sets
2) Stream to the standard platforms of OBS

Is the set-up required that much different????

Here's what I have
RANE Seventy Mixer
Serato DJ Pro
Mac Powerbook (Catalina)
iMac (Catalina)

I've tried the one laptop set-up.
I'm running the RANE to the Mac Powerbook (USB)
I'm running Serato DJ Pro on the Mac Powerbook
Set-up OBS with Video Capture (my facetime cam) which works perfect.
Set-up OBS with Audio Input Source to the RANE mixer
The recording doesn't record! You can see video but no sound.

I've tried to the two Macs approach.
I'm running RANE to the Mac Powerbook (USB)
I'm running Serato DJ Pro on the Mac Powerbook
I'm running RANE to the iMac (2nd USB port off the mixer)
I'm running OBS off of the iMac
Set-up OBS with Video Capture (my facetime cam) which works perfect
Set-up OBS with Audio Input Source to the RANE mixer. (set the audio to 7.1)
This way kind of works... but i'm getting control vinyl sound with the music in the mix.

I also downloaded the iShowU Audio Capture. Not really sure if I need this or not.
I've also tried the headphone jack to rca/phono wires.

I admittedly don't know what I'm doing and ANY help would immensely appreciated.

Hi - another old school vinyl DJ here who recently figured it out...I'll try to help!
I too have/had no idea what I'm doing, so you're not alone.

For video, it sounds like you have video but no sound.
On OBS, you may need to bring in an "Audio Input Capture" source and make sure it's turned on - I have mine set at around -3db (almost all the way up), and make sure the red X is not selected (meaning it's on mute). For every scene you build, you will need to include your audio source.

I'm not sure what else you're having trouble with - are you trying to stream to Twitch or somewhere else and that's not working?

Thanks much!

I suppose my question is do I need an external audio source if I have two macs? Can’t one of them serve as the source?

again, thank you. Happy to hear from another newbie!

Yes. The Audio Input Capture is a source you would add to OBS. When you add it, then you would select the Capture Card - like EL Gato HD60S+. This should capture any audio going over HDMI from the Source Mac. If you still hear no sound, you might have the route the sound on the Source Mac to the Capture Card via the Capture Card's software.

Thanks phatheads.

To confirm...

Rane to MacBook Pro (usb)
MacBook Pro to capture card to iMac????

sorry If this obvious and I’m not getting it.
Don’t want to go buy a capture card if I don’t need it - but looks like I need one!

For my setup, I don't use/have a capture card (although I could benefit from one, but didn't want to buy one)
I use 1 Mac, Pioneer S9, Serato & Vinyl and the webcam on my MacBook Pro and my iPhone as a second webcam w/NDI.

You shouldn't have to have a capture card with your setup.

Did you try adding the Audio Input Capture in your source and test sound that way?

I just picked up Loopback and that did the trick. I don’t have an audio controller of any kind and didn’t really want to buy one - but saw the Loopback option and it seems to be working.

Funktype - what is the audio capture source set to in OBS?

Thanks funktype for the help.
