newb question on how to record

I want to record the you tube video i am watching. I only seem to be able to see the OBS main screen though.
how do I display and record you tube and operate OBS at the same time? I thought maybe studio mode, but that shows me two screens of OBS main view.
I seem to be able to only do one or the other.
in videos people select a separate screen, but i only have one.

If you just want to have that youtube video as movie file on your PC, use youtube-dl and not OBS Studio. OBS Studio isn't the right tool for this.

i want to download a clip from a news interview, then reply to it with a clip from a movie. which is the best software to do that?

Ok, if you want to record yourself in addition, OBS has its use for this. You can minimize OBS to get it out of the way, you don't need it in foreground while it is recording. Define and use hotkeys to control it while minimized. See Settings->Hotkeys. Or just start recording, then minimize OBS, then do your stuff, and after you have finished, stop recording. Then cut the start and end from the video to remove your interaction with OBS with some postprocessing software.
However, the most easy way to control OBS is to have 2 monitors and move OBS to your secondary monitor while recording stuff on your primary monitor.
