I can't understand why you guys can't get a handle on this spam that's all over this support board.
Hundreds of spam messages are clogging my inbox every day.
There must be some solution to stopping this...

This all started when you upgraded the forum message board.

Thanks and good luck...

If there was a solution, it would have already been stopped.....

Well, I know some others that have abandoned using the OBS support board because of this...
I have been using support boards for years and have never encountered a spam problem like this board has...

Oh well...

Are you subscribed to email messages for every new message that is posted on the forum?

The spam is being created manually, by actual people. There is very little we can do to combat it outside remaining vigilant and deleting things as they come in. If you have any suggestions on how we can fight against it, we'd be happy for the ideas!

May I ask a question about that "chinese university spam" - do you know what the purpose of this spam is? I see no link, text completely chinese (that I'm unable to read) and in every post a different university name in latin letters. And then there is that different kind of spam, only numbers such as "40", "84+1". What's the purpose of all this?

As far as I know from other forum operators, they use a combination of these measures to fight this kind of spam:

- captcha at account creation
- unique email address (not used by any other account of the forum)
- posting only after successful email verification
- geolocation service (for example Maxmind) to identify location of account owner
- make first postings from locations identified as prime spam source visible only after moderator releases it. Queue first postings of new users from these locations into moderator queue. I don't know from where the spammers here actually come from, but for other forums the main sources are China and India.

Some forums also block certain email providers to prevent the usage of mass-created email accounts, but that is a really harsh measure and will lock out quite some legit users.

We use all of those measures already, the spam is human generated so they are able to work around any issues like IP blocking by using proxies / VPN servers in the EU and USA. I ban them as I find them but there are so many out there. There's actually a lot of spam that is caught by the mod queue that you guys aren't seeing, but the small amount that makes it through is still a problem.

I'm sure it will be solved soon...
Good luck..
