Edit: This thread was originally about figuring out what Laptop to get, but I've been successfully talked out of that. Now I am looking for a PC and monitor combo, so please help! I am not very tech savvy and can use any advice or suggestions you can give. Thanks!

Hello!

I've spent the last few days trying to narrow down my pick for a laptop to starting recording/streaming video game footage, as well as playing and editing said footage on. I know that a laptop, however powerful, will never be as ideal as a PC for this kind of stuff, and I really, REALLY wish I could get a PC right now. But because of my work and living situation, I would really need a computer that is portable. So for now, a laptop it must be. At the same time, I am not very tech-savvy, though I am trying to get there. I am mostly looking for laptops within the $900-$1000 range, that are significantly better than my current HP Envy laptop (which is like a dinosaur at this point).

Alright, with all that said, I think I really like the laptop that I am going to be posting below. It fits within the price range, it's made by ASUS which I think has a pretty good record for powerful laptops, and the specs, to my eye, are quite good for the money. But, as I said, my sense of these things isn't the best and I'm sure you all would have a much better idea of if this is would be a good choice for what I would like to do. So here it is:

One other thing, I would like to stream FROM my PS4 to the Laptop to capture in OBS, which requires an HDMI cable of course. I couldn't find this info, but does this laptop have an HDMI input? I know most laptops now have an HDMI output, but I don't know about input. Sorry if that is a very basic question, as I said, I am not very tech savvy at all. I really appreciate any and all help making this decision. Thanks!

"U" series chips are dual core and generally won't be suitable for streaming. "MQ" "HQ" "QM" "QH" ones are quad core.

But laptops aren't generally suitable for streaming due to quirks with switchable graphics or simple processor limitations.

So definitely need a quad core then. Are you saying that no laptops should be used for streaming or just that it isn't ideal? If I don't stream, is recording still doable in a satisfying way, eve if it's not the best possible?

Generally, laptops are not ideal as the reduced power from the wall usually means reduced performance in the processor.

Okay, I've done a lot of rearranging in my apartment and I think I can finally house a desktop PC. Mostly it was the constant resistance to laptops on this forum that forced me to change my mind... so thank you! So, the title of this thread is no longer valid... but... now I am looking for a new PC and a new monitor! Any suggestions? I'm trying to keep my budget between $1000 and $1250 for both PC and monitor combined.

Not familiar with prices in your country but I'd go for:

CPU: Ryzen R5 1600x or R7 1700
GPU: GTX 1060 6GB
RAM: 16GB of a reputable brand, preferably 2800 to 3200MHz, for both compatibility and benefits from using Ryzen CPU

Everything else to taste, just make sure you read reviews and get a good power supply unit.

I really appreciate you all giving me advice on this! I have to say, I'm somewhat terrified about building my own computer. I did it myself several years ago and the computer always had problems and I never knew what part I had installed wrong (if that was the reason) and I didn't have a manufacturer I could turn to for trouble shooting for the PC as a whole. I understand its cheaper to build your own, but are there any pre-builts you could recommend?

What do you think about the specs on this one? Even if I were to just buy the parts myself and build it (which I'm still very iffy on), are these the speccs I should go for? It has a Ryzen R7 1700x and a GTX 1080 8gb.

You're better off going to an electronics store go to Amazon to buy the individual parts to make a PC. It gives you a lot more freedom on which parts to choose. For example: the pre-built you chose isn't bad, but Windows 10 Pro is not needed unless you want extra features and extra RAM. Plus, if you're near a router, you can just use the Gigabit ethernet on the PC's motherboard and use a cable to connect to your router instead of using a Wi-Fi adapter.
Oh, and a Ryzen 7 1700 is cheaper and overclockable.

You mean buy the parts online, but then pay an electronics store to build it for me? That could be a way to go about it, since I don't really feel confident in my own skills to do it.
