Hello,
I record actual play ttrpg sessions on OBS for subsequent upload on YouTube. The channel is gaining some traction, and viewers have recently commented on the need to normalize the audio levels among all the players.
Video and audio of my 4 players are coming from Discord. As usual, all of the Discord audio is a single track in OBS. They are all in separate locations, using a mix of Windows and Macs, and all of their mics are Blue Snowballs.
My video and audio are recorded separately in OBS, coming directly from my camera and mic (not through Discord). I use Windows. My mic is a Beacn, and I use its digital interface to do some pre-amp tweaking (mostly noise suppression).
None of us have mixing hardware.
Does anyone have a recommended step-by-step for normalizing audio during recording? I assume it must be a careful application of audio filters in OBS — maybe gain, compression, and limiters? I’m unsure what my players should do on their end with their sound settings (both on their OS and in Discord), what I should do on my end by tweaking individual user volumes on Discord, and then what I should apply and adjust on OBS.
I’m only versed enough in audio tech enough to know that quality audio is essential for audience retention, so I would love some walk-thru help written in newbie-ese!
Thank you in advance!
