I am providing technical support to a group in Europe, so I do not have the hardware in my possession.
We have an Blackmagic ATEM Television Studio HD and connect its Program output (SDI), which connects to UltraStudio Mini Recorder, which in turn connects to our OBS computer via Thunderbolt.
Here are the specs of that OBS computer:
MacBook Pro, 13 inch, mid 2014; Processor 2.6 GHz Intel Core i5; Memory 8GB 1600 MHz DDR3; Graphics Intel Iris 1536MB; OS Mojave, 10.14.6. Storage: 75GB available
Ports: 2 USB, 2 Thunderbolt ports, 1 HDMI, 1 SD Card Reader
The ATEM receives audio from each of its two attached cameras (via HDMI). In addition, we have audio coming into the ATEM from the XLR Aux audio input. From the ATEM, we turn off both camera audio sources, leaving only the Aux audio (XLR) as a constant, unchanging audio, regardless of which video is chosen.
So, on OBS, when trying to add a new source, it seems that the UltraStudio Mini Recorder can be created as a 1. Video Capture device; 2. Audio Capture device; 3. a BlackMagic device.
If, when creating a new source, we choose that 3rd option (a BlackMagic device), and then add that device as the only source for a new scene, and then cut to that new scene, something odd happens. The audio mixer shows two audio inputs, one labeled as "Mic/Aux", and the second as "BlackMagic Audio" (I cannot recall the specific name of this second source).
I do not understand why OBS is seeing multiple audio channels. The audio (like the video) is switched at the ATEM.
We have confirmed that the Mic/Aux is not the internal mic on the computer (by tapping on the computer, verses tapping a mic coming into the ATEM on the XLR audio port). I cannot understand why the computer is seeing two separate audio inputs coming from the UltraStudio Mini Recorder. Stated differently, it seems that by adding the "BlackMagic device" to OBS, two audio sources are visible. Can it be that the program output of the ATEM is sending multiple audio channels to the OBS computer?
More broadly, it would be helpful to understand the difference between adding the ATEM (via the Mini Recorder, via the Thunderbolt port of the computer) as a 1. Video Capture device; 2. Audio Capture device; 3. a BlackMagic device. Could anyone explain?
Many thanks,
Ken
