Question / Help Mixer VU Meters - only DAD shows up in anything more than mono

I have a Desktop Audio Device (DAD), DAD2, and a Mic/Auxilary Audio Device enabled. For fun/experimentation, I turned on 5.1 (under Channels). Only the DAD device is showing up with 5.1 channels of VU meters in the Mixer, my DAD2 isn't. If I swap the devices in the Audio settings it's the same, only the device in DAD shows up with more than one VU meter. Is this working as intended? I'm assuming it's not.

Further, if I save my settings with a 5.1 VU meter showing (for example), and I exit, the next time OBS loads, I'm back to a single channel. I have to change the audio monitoring settings for the 5.1 VU to pop up again.

I can't comment on the first half of your question (it definitely sounds bugged though), but I can provide insight into the second one.

The reason OBS shows 1 channel on initial startup is because OBS actually has no way to "know" how many channels an audio source has until it plays audio. Personally I think it should cache the last known channel count so it doesn't look weird on restart, then update as needed once it gets info.

Um, save the layout from last time? I mean if I turn on 5.1 and my sound device never outputs more than 2 channels (whether it's not capable or there's no 5.1 content), then the "extra" VU levels just never move. I really don't see what the problem is. If I turn on 5.1, show 5.1 VU meters - every time I start the program. I mean, if I set the audio to 2 channels (stereo) and my device outputs 7.1 then OBS is just tossing out the "extra" 5.1 channels anyway - it doesn't care.

Make sure that all your output/input devices uses multi-channel for shared mode in Windows:
  • Recording devices>Properties>Advanced>Default Format;
  • Playback devices>Configure;

What does 16-bit, 48,000 Hz have to do with the number of channels of VU meters showing up in one slot but not the other in OBS?

Here is what I see. Please note that my issue is with my PLAYBACK devices, not my recording devices. I don't care that my mic is recording mono, I'm not talented enough to make my voice show up differently in two places anyway.

Interesting thing.
Only I can recommend is not to use 7.1 for audio monitoring on Windows with OBS Studio (v21.0.3). Hardly you can notice it but layout is slightly different.

Unfortunately, I don't have second 7.1 device to test it (at least virtually).
