Question / Help Microphone cuts out when peaking [Solved]

Is this an effect that is intended? It's causing me massive problems during my stream. I personally am a pretty vocal guy and I use a CAD Audio XLR microphone via a mixer, so I tend to do all of my audio mixing manually and have everything at perfect levels. Then I made the switch to OBS Studio and my microphone started cutting out A LOT during the streams. I noticed that this didn't happen with OBS classic (that I'm aware of) so I don't think it's my microphone going out. (I can also scream into the thing in audacity and it works - even with massive peaking)


Is there any way to disable this natural audio cut? I looked through the settings and couldn't really find anything other than the noise gate but that should be giving the opposite effect. I would REALLY appreciate any help with this as it will help me determine if my microphone is somehow at fault.

If you mean "microphone can't be heard" when it peaks, that is indeed not intended. At worst it should clip (and you should really get something to counteract that and automatically lower the microphone volume then).

What filters do you have attached to the microphone?

I'm getting the "microphone can't be heard" effect and no clipping whatsoever. I'm not using any actual filters in OBS, but instead am just using the volume and gain settings on the mixer. I don't know if I'm allowed to post a clip but the general issue is that it will get to a higher volume, then just cut out entirely and bounce around for a second like it's continuing to peak. If I watch the volume slider on OBS, it gets to about 70% and then immediately drops to 5-10% and bounces up and down for a second or so before resetting back to normal.

I've been trying to reproduce what you're experiencing with my XLR microphone, however I'm having 0 luck doing so. Even if i yell as loud as possible (my neighbours hated that one), I can't get it to cut out - only to peak and clip.

Do you have any voice changer software, special audio drivers or something installed?

I don't use any software outside of OBS for this, and my audio is coming from an XLR microphone, through a mixer, and then down through the 3.5 channels to each computer. Bear in mind with the log file that this is a 2 PC setup and that OBS is the only thing running on this PC. I'm noticing a part in the log file that doesn't seem right and seems to time with the microphone cutting out during the test vod, as well as an earlier mention of an audio encoder not loading. (not sure if that one is necessary)

So looking at the log you are still using an ancient version of OBS Studio. If you receive an update is available dialog when OBS launches, that one is not there to just be clicked away - it is extremely highly recommended to always use the latest version.

Once you have upgraded, you can also install the CoreAudio AAC encoder to get slightly better audio quality: https://obsproject.com/forum/resources/obs-studio-enable-coreaudio-aac-encoder-windows.220/

HOLY CRAP. I was on version 0.15 and current is 17.0. I don't know how I never noticed this, I don't get the update notification anymore. Updating right now. I'm hoping this fixes the issue.

There's no audio buffering increase in there, so it's not caused by audio buffering. That brings up the question if it is actually OBS causing this.

Do you have any other apps that can capture WASAPI audio? AudaCity should be capable of using WASAPI, so it would be nice to know if it is reproduceable there too. Ideally the recording session in audacity should run side by side with an obs capture session.

So when pushing the audio to Audacity the mic peaks, but does not cut out like it does in OBS. I'm thinking that the input to the streaming PC may have been too high from the mixer to the PC and the gain loss from my ground lifter may be causing it. I turned down the main out going to the streaming PC and can no longer replicate this. This was not the case before updating. Updating plus the volume adjustment seems to have done the trick.

As of now I can no longer replicate this issue - So I guess it's safe to say that it's solved. Thank you so much!

Edit : I wasn't seeing any peaking on the mixer itself - not into the red at least - but apparently there is a max decibel level on the microphone and line in ports, and having the gain / volume level too high may have caused the port to not be able to handle it. I do not have a dedicated sound card, so this is the best explanation I can come up with.
