Question / Help Micro Jitters in Local Recordings - Log Posted

New to the forum and tried to ask this once and got no response. So I'll try again with a new thread.

I have a pretty high-end computer. 32GB RAM, Core i7-7820X @ 3.60GHz NVMe SSD

When creating local recordings @ 60fps or 59.94fps I get little micro-jitters every few seconds. When I record at 60fps, I get the jitters every few seconds but they're not too terrible. When recording at 59.94, I get the jitters less often but when they do show up they're more severe.

I've tried every setting I can think of. NVENC, x264, 60 fps, 59.94 fps, 30fps, CBR, VBR, CRF, CQP, Simple, Advanced, high bitrate, low bitrate . . . I've made about 50 recordings in the last few days and I cannot get rid of these jitters. It's really ruining my final product and I'm not sure what to do about it.

Any help would be MUCH appreciated. Following is my most recent log file and also a video in which you can see what I'm talking about (see :44, 1:20, as well as lots of other places as you watch the video).

The NBA allows these highlight videos as per Adam Silver as long as they're under a certain time limit.

Thank you for any help anyone can provide.

Windows is out of date and Game Mode is on by default and cannot be switched off. You should run the October 2018 update and turn off Game Mode.

That said, there is no appreciable rendering or encoding lag in your current log, so this may belong that category of "tiny stutters on single machine Nvidia setups that no one seems to be able to replicate or resolve".

Thank you for your help. I don't know how Windows is out of date as I run automatic updates. I will check into that later today and make sure it is updated and game mode is turned off. Hopefully that will help. Thank so so much for your help. It is much appreciated.

That would be a really bad category to fit into.

Tonight I went through a variety of steps to try to rectify the problem to no avail.

First, I updated Windows. Why it wasn't updated I don't know. It regularly updates but for some reason didn't do the October 2018 update. So I got that done then tried again. No luck.

Then I updated my Nvidia drivers to the latest version and tried again. No luck.

Then I tried turning hardware acceleration off in Chrome. Holy crap. That made everything terrible.

Then I tried using Firefox. Same.

When I watch the original stream on YouTube TV, it looks great. Nice and smooth. But when I record it and watch back the recording, there are always these micro jitters.

I tried a variety of settings again tonight. My latest setting for recording was:

Advanced - NVENC - CQP 10 - profile MAIN - Level AUTO - two pass

Most recent log file here: https://obsproject.com/logs/2KDftptZnCSlYF1B

Any other help would be MUCH appreciated as I'm totally stumped. I do think it's related to frame rate somehow because when I record at 60fps the micro jitter seems to occur more regularly - every 15-30 seconds. But when I record at 59.94, the jitters occur less (maybe once per minute or two) but when they occur, they're much more significant and can totally ruin a play.

Well, you say it's not OBS specific, but as I've tried everything I know to try with OBS, it's time to try a different recording software.

Browse this forum for long enough and you'll come across thread after thread discussing the issue stretching back a few years.

Take it from me, it's unresolved and no amount of research, tinkering or tweaking will resolve it. If the microstutter is a deal breaker, you'd be advised to find an alternative solution to OBS or adopt a capture hardware+OBS solution. (I've tried every alternative package - paid, free and subscription - and none of them suffer from microstutter the way OBS can, so there are options.)

I'm having the same problem with stuttering, jitters or whatever you call it.

Any alternates that you'd recommend? Thanks.
