Mic refuses to record separately

I had it setup where my mic records on a separate audio track to the desktop audio, for ease of editing etc.
I have my mic setup on track 2, desktop on track 1, and the recording settings have tracks 1 and 2 selected, but now my mic audio just wont pickup unless its set to track 1 and mixes with the desktop audio, if i keep the mic selected on track 2 only, the recording doesn't pickup the mic audio even though it shows the levels moving in obs itself.
should be a log file with current settings - im sure im probably just missing something somewhere - it has worked before.

Thanks in advance.

If you record something to multiple tracks, you need to switch track in your media player to hear what is recorded on the other tracks. Media players will never mix audio tracks - they will play back one track at a time only.

No but this records and shows 2 tracks in davinci, but the recording only has game audio unless I tell obs to record the mic on the same track as the desktop audio - otherwise it just doesn't pick the mic up. The recording has the mic audio recorded onto the same audio track as the desktop audio in davinci - it shows 2 tracks but the second track is effectively empty - both lots of audio are recorded onto track 1, and if I specify obs to record the mic to track 2 - it doesn't pick up any mic audio.

Make sure you made the intended assignments between sources and tracks in Edit→Advanced Audio Properties in OBS.

It seems to work normally if I record in .mp4 and not .mkv - is this the case or should it still record onto 2 separate tracks in .mkv aswell?
