Question / Help Mic output extremely loud

Hi guys,

The problem I have is the volume of my mic output on OBS. If I speak in a calm, pretty soft manner, everything is fine. But as soon as I raise my voice to just above normal speaking level or higher, the sound is extremely loud, like it literally hurt my ears the first time I watched back a recorded video. I've already tried different mics, etc.
If anyone knows what could be the problem, it would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,
Kevin

your audio is probably clipping. Try lowering your mic volume in windows settings not OBS.

Go to control panel -> hardware and sound -> sound -> (a new window should pop up) go to recording tab -> select your microphone and go to properties -> levels -> lower your microphone volume level, (mine is around 70 but yours is probably different) also if your mic has boost turn that down/off.

You can see if your audio is clipping on the obs window. In the audio section on the main window there should be a green bar that moves as you talk. If it is hitting the end of the bar when you are talking then your mic is too loud.

The answer by @C-Dude is not entirely correct.

Input volume clipping can be detected by keeping an eye on the feeble little dots to the left of the volume fader: if they turn white, you have input clipping and need to lower the mic sensitivity or volume (externally to OBS, in your OS or sometimes in the mic itself).

If the OBS volume fader is flashing, then you have output clipping.
