Question / Help Mic Hiss when starting and stopping talking.

This could be caused by microphone auto gain, which puts the gain level higher when you're not talking. This picks up the white noise at the beginning of your speaking (before it drops the gain level when it detects the louder sound of your voice) and at the end of your speaking (after it raises the gain level when you stop talking, but before the mic cuts off). You could fix this by using a manually set gain level on your microphone.

I don't use a Gain filter at all. Do you think using the Gain filter with default settings would be a start?

The auto gain might not be through OBS. Some microphone inputs (such as mine) have an auto gain control as a checkbox through the windows sound options.

I'm not at my laptop now, but I'll check for any gain setup on the mic already and move onto OBS afterwards if none is present.

That hiss is because it's a condenser plugged in to a 3.5mm Microphone jack sadly, that is a notoriously noisy mic when connected like this.

When you gain boost without a pre-amp it turns up EVERYTHING. The hiss is still there when you are speaking, the expander is trying to keep it down but the noise is very very loud.

This is also a side-address microphone, you are talking into the end kind of side as if it were an end address, easy mistake to make but this is causing you to have to boost the gain to make up for the off axis pickup.

You can see the condenser capsule here.

Reorient your mic so that when facing and speaking towards your PC you are speaking into the side of the mic, so your voice hits the face of the capsule. You can put the mic vertically with either the XLR on the top or bottom, or put it horizontally.

Check to see if it has a front, or back label like this, you want the Front side of the capsule facing your mouth.

hello there, I have a similar issue on my end and thought I'd ask here.

I use an AKG D 330-BT microphone and a Yamaha audiogram 6 audio interface on which I have the gain on a standard 50%. in OBS itself I have my settings a friend of mine suggested to make me sound "buttery smooth" as he described it to noise gate: standard, gain: -6.00 dB and limiter: thres. -6.00 dB rel. 60 ms.

And while yes, I sound smooth, I have do have the white noise and about every background sound is captured as well....I hope this is the right spot for help.

I took a sample clip from my latest stream https://clips.twitch.tv/ObliqueOptimisticPeppermintDxAbomb-bQ2w6LLQRLfkxJw5

thanks in advance
