Mic drops when system sound plays, but only for a few seconds

Hi forum,

I'm using OBS 29.0.2 to record some instructional IT videos at work. It's a pretty vanilla setup, although I have had to change the Output Encoder to Software (x264) because of issues with pause not working and losing work when recording.

When I am recording, if a system sound plays on the computer it's like the mic cuts out for a few seconds and then comes back again. If the system sound continues to play, the mic keeps working so it only seems to happen if there has been no system sound playing for a while. I've attached a link to an example of the problem.

Advanced Audio Properties look like this

I have a Dell Latitude 3520 and use a headset to the 3.5mm headset jack. The audio driver is Realtek on this model. If I change the default output device to something other than the headset (to USB speakers, or to the monitor speakers) the issue is just the same. There are no audio filters being used on the Mic source.

Any advice or pointers from someone more experienced with OBS would be appreciated.

Thanks

Mike

Please post an OBS log of a stream or recording
Check your audio filters Make sure you don't have our system sound set as a ducking source

Thanks for the reply.

Log file attached of a session where the mic drops out for about 2 secs when a system sound plays.

Cheers

I've followed this guide https://obsproject.com/wiki/Filters-Guide#sidechain-compressionducking for info on ducking. I have no audio filters configured, and in the drop down for adding an audio filter, I don't have an option for sidechain/ducking, it skips from Compressor to Expander to Gain in my list.

I've done a further test in OBS and blow me down, not it's not dropping out at all and I've changed absolutely nothing, but did reboot yesterday for something unrelated to OBS.

I'll class this as just 'one of those things' :)
