Question / Help Mic Distortion when adding 2nd C920 Webcam

Hey all,

I'm running two Logitech C920 webcams, and I want them each on their own USB Root Hub in a hope that the sound distortion when two Logitech C920 webcams are running disappears.

When I look in Device Manager and View Devices By Connection I can see that ALL of my USB Devices are hooked up to the USB 3.0 Hub.

With everything under the USB 3.0 Root Hub it seems, after researching, that this is the culprit of the sound distortion, and the solution I've found by searching through forums has been to insure each webcam is on it's own hub so it doesn't get overloaded. I've also confirmed that this issue persists even if each webcam is running at 640x480 resolution.

On the back of my Asus B85M-E/CSM MOBO I have two USB 3.0 ports and four USB 2.0 ports. There's an additional two USB 2.0 ports on the front of my case.

No matter which USB port I plug my devices in to they ALL show up under the USB 3.0 Root Hub. I notice in Device Manager that there are two other USB Root Hubs listed, but I can't get a device to recognize under one of those hubs.

I've attached a picture highlighting the other two apparent USB hubs that are being reported from the MOBO.

I've opened up my computer case and see that there's one available USB header to plug in to, is this what it's reporting? I tried plugging in a USB 2.0 expansion card in there but I got USB Overcurrent Detected. I thought my wires were fine, but I reversed them anyway just to be sure, and same Overcurrent Detected error message. Perhaps a faulty header expansion device? I've also tried an AC (self-powered) USB Hub, but the issue persists.

I was thinking about going out and buying another USB 2.0 expansion header, but don't want to bother if there's something else I'm missing, or If I'm even heading down the right path to resolve this sound distortion issue?

Kind Regards,

Please post a log.

Also, make sure your webcams aren't running at 1080p. c920s are pretty well-known for causing performance/audio issues when running at 1080p.

Okay, posting the log here.
Cameras are both set to 640x480, and there's still distorted audio.

Okay, so I've made some progress regarding this issue.
The problem seems to lie with the USB 3.0 Driver that Intel provides for my MOBO (and many others):
Intel USB 3.0 Driver V3.0.1.41 for Windows Win7

If I uninstall the USB 3.0 Driver, then I'm able to have devices connected across the two USB Hubs (highlighted in red from my picture), and with each Logitech C920 Webcam on it's own hub, all of the audio distortion is gone!

My solution for now is to NOT have the USB 3.0 driver installed.

If anyone has any advice on how to get devices to read on these two hubs even when I have the USB 3.0 driver installed, I'm all ears. I'm thinking this may have something to do with some of the USB BIOS settings( ie: xHCI mode, etc..) but I've done some configuring in there and my USB 3.0 Host Hub is still greedy no matter what settings I set.

Regards,
