Mic Audio Low and Muffled Sounding

So I bought a new PC, used to use mac, and installed OBS on here. I was excited cause mac isn't the best for OBS, but my microphone audio is extraordinarily quiet and muffled sounding, like it is in a drawer. I am using a headset and a splitter to connect the headphone jack to both the mic and audio output ports on my pc. I have tried going into advanced settings but to no avail.

Some PCs have audio ports than can act as either TRS or TRRS, ie you don't need a splitter. Are you sure you should be using the splitter?
Have you gone into Settings (was Control Panel) to Sounds and tested the microphone there?
Have you tried using Windows Recorder? ie check mic outside of OBS and make sure OS settings are correct first, then in OBS.
Have you tried an alternate microphone?
Some OEMs have 3rd party sound software, that may also need 'checking'. My PC has multiple microphone options ... way more complicated than it used to be... just a caution to not assume something should work with whatever default setting happens to be in place

There are others like koala that know OBS audio way better than I. With that said, my recommendation is to disable default OBS Desktop Audio and add specific Audio sources per scene as desired. then you can adjust audio per source

Make sure you have the right mic selected in your Audio settings. OBS defaults to the "windows default", so whatever windows has set as the default microphone will be what you start out with. If you have a webcam, there's the possibility that it wants to use that audio instead of your mic.

Omfg, thank you so much!!! 3 1/2 years later, I finally have my voice sounding more clearly, along with the Vst plugin EQ set perfectly for my voice tone. I couldn't be happier!
