THIS IS AN FYI
OB Studio 17.0.0 x64 for Win x64, OBS downloaded 13 Jan 2017
Installed Win10 Direct3D is version 12.
Intel HD 4000 + NVIDIA GEforce 650M display adapters, latest drivers each. NVIDIA set as the preferred PhysX processor.

Using 2 external Dell displays & adding a Display Capture video source with mostly default Profile settings gave blank screens both displays.

See this older goodie first: https://obsproject.com/forum/threads/laptop-black-screen-when-capturing-read-here-first.5965/

After much fiddling around discovered by accident in Profile Settings:
Advanced->Video:Renderer defaults to 'Direct3D 11'

For grins changed this to 'OpenGL' and BANG! - display capture came alive. Cannot say anything about perf with OpenGL but at least get functionality.

In order to display capture properly on switchable graphics laptops, OBS needs to run on the intel and not the geforce.

Using the OpenGL renderer on windows is STRONGLY discouraged as you will definitely have reduced performance and can run into issues with certain games. This is not a solution, and I'm skeptical that it actually made any difference for display capture's ability to hook into a monitor. The thread you already linked is the correct solution. Yes, the thread is fairly old, but the solution has not changed so there hasn't been a need to update.
