Keyboard Sounds Only Audible While Speaking

Hi All,

My keyboard sounds / strokes become audible in the recording only when I am speaking. I have added;

• Noise Suppressor
• Noise Gate
• Lowered my overall mic gain (mic sensitivity)
• Shock mount to reduce vibration through desk and boom arm, as well as pop filter.

When I am not speaking, my mouse clicks and keyboard strokes are completely silent. Even while smashing keys and clicks. No noise whatsoever.

However, if I type while I am talking, the keyboard strokes are clearly audible in the recording. I assume this is a result of my voice activating and enabling the noise gate, but it then pics up my keyboard sounds while I speak.

Does anyone have a fix for this? Any information will be greatly appreciated.

The noise gate will give the behavior you describe. While you're not speaking, the general volume picked up by the mic is very low, so the noise gate will shut off it completely and neither mouse clicks nor keyboard strokes are there. As long as you speak, the general volume is above the cutoff threshold, so everything the mic is picking up is transmitted, so your mouse clicks and keyboard strokes are included.

If you want your mouse clicks and keyboard strokes not being included even while you speak, you need some physical rearranging on your desk. A more silent mouse and keyboard will help. A noise absorbing carpet pad for them would help. Make sure your desk isn't acting as resonating body.
A microphone with a selective pickup pattern, directed to just your head, will help. If you're using a standalone desk microphone, move it to the other side of your desk, so it's more near to your mouth than to your mouse/keyboard. Don't put the mic stand on the desk, so the noise cannot be transferred mechanically. Instead of a desk microphone, use a headset or clip mic directly in front of your mouth, so it just picks up your voice and no ambient sound.
