It just does not work at all

I'm using the Mac version and none of this makes any sense to me at all.

I created a new layout with both a screen capture and a "capture c ard device" my video camera as sources, moved the card device to the left hand corner of the screen and moved it to the front in the left hand window.

Recorded a video and the video window isn't present either on my screen or in the recorded video.

And the sound is too low. Even though I've got my sound volume at maximum.

None of this makes any sense to me at all. All the video recording software I've ever used doesn't have any of this complexity, you just select your sourcez and hit record. Both the preview: Scene and Program:Scene windows clearly show I should have a capture from my built in camera on the bottom left of screen, but this is simply not appearing in my videos.

So how do I ake it appear and how do I fix the sound volume issue, given the volume in the sound setting is already at maximum? It's recorxing sound but it's just barely audible even though the volume meters are pushing at the top of the green zone when I test it?

I think you should make sure that the camera source is not hidden in the scene, is above other layers and is included in the program output. Regarding the sound, try checking that the volume of the capture source in OBS is turned up to maximum. And also that the macOS input volume and the program permissions** are set correctly. So you may need to adjust the microphone gain or audio filter in the program.
