Is Zoom necessary for conferencing?

Trying to setup a conference call with video.
Brand new to the field.
I have OBS (of course) and Zoom (free edition)
Have not yet setup Zoom.
Tried Microsoft Teams but it was way beyond my limited intelligence.

My question is....
Is Zoom even necessary?

Yo don't need OBS to make a conference call with video. Just a webcam and a mic and of course a conference software like Teams, Skype, Zoom, etc...

No, you need to combine OBS with other software in order to do a videoconference. With OBS you can do recordings or live-streamings to the online streaming platforms (like Youtube, Twitch, etc..), and there you can have live feedback of your viewers.

Said that, you can combine OBS with other conference software using the OBS VirtualCamera option

We use OBS and Zoom, but only because our service requires different camera angles and a NDI feed for front of house display and lower thrids. If your camera is stationary, or you only have one camera you don't need OBS as the go between.
