Is Streaming using MKV Possible?

I'm a newcomer to using OBS. As far as I can determine, there is no way to stream other than recording to MP4. Is that correct? I'd much prefer to use the MKV container. Is it possible to stream while recording to MKV files?
 
Thanks for your reply. I'd like to record live musical concerts and stream them on YouTube AND record them simultaneously. Is that possible? I'll be using 2 mics and a SLR or video camera. Is that possible with OBS?
 
OBS very much can do that.
The recording format has no bearing on what format is sent to the streaming service.
