Question / Help Is Stream Engine necessary for Avermedia Live Gamer HD 2 or any Avermedia Card in 2019?

Hey so I have been trying to configure my girlfriends stream setup and I have 2 capture cards at my disposal, an elgato hd60 pro(which for some reason will not detect in the rig despite detecting in 2 other rigs) and an Avermedia Live Gamer HD 2.

Now I use the Avermedia Live Gamer HD 2 as my personal streaming capture card, and a while ago when I started using it I was recommended to use the "Stream Engine 1" for video, and "Use custom audio device: Stream Engine (Digital Audio Interface) 1 for audio." I saw it on a forum post and again later on their own website that it will help to negate any de-sync issues, to which I have experienced none since setting it up on day 1 like this.

However, I am now experiencing an issue where selecting "custom audio device" specifically when I select "stream engine (digital audio interface) 1" on my gf's new pc completely locks up SLOBS and OBS and makes the picture go black, the only way to get the picture to return is to remove the source and re-input the Avermedia source. I can enable stream engine 1 for the video, I can even enable output sound to desktop (although it doesn't seem to work for some reason) it just doesn't like custom audio device with the stream engine digital audio interface.

The thing is in researching for this issue I found a post from 2017 saying that OBS has been updated to where it has made the "stream engine" variants for audio and video obsolete and that avermedia cards no longer need them to ensure they operate without de-syncing. Is this true, because If I don't enable custom audio device I get a moving video, no audio tho, but one step at a time. I am currently in talks with Elgato as well to see if they can figure out why I can't get the rig to recognize that the elgato device is in there, I even got a new motherboard because I thought that was the issue, but that is a problem for another time. Just curios about the "stream engine stuff," to be clear do I need to enable stream engine for audio and video, or just video, or not at all because its obsolete now. Thanks guys.

So @MrBayeasy have you ever figured this out? I am grappling with this same issue. I am using the external USB device (instead of the internal card) but I constantly have issues with the Sound Device having to be deselected and not working. Not sure if I should use the engine or not? As I am able to get the video using either direct or via engine method?
