Input camera displaying in parts - glitch/error

It's hard to explain but I connected two identical Canon cameras to OBS via a BlackMagic Design ATEM mini pro using two HDMI to mini-HDMI cables, and USB-C from the ATEM to a Macbook Pro.

When I first started testing out switching the cameras with the ATEM, the video feeds from each camera looked absolutely fine.

I don't recall changing any settings, but all of a sudden one of the feeds changed so that the image was split. I didn't take a picture but I've drawn a basic example as best I can. The left drawing is a normal image, the right is how it was appearing instead.

Any advice greatly appreciated, it's hard to do a search online for the problem when it's hard to explain.

Looks like you've lost sync. Surprising that HDMI would do that, as the sync uses different codes on the same data lines as the picture.

OBS is probably fine: it's just passing through what it gets from the capture card. The problem is probably in the ATEM.
  • The ATEM has an HDMI out; does the problem appear there too?
  • Can you composite multiple sources in the ATEM, with one bad and the rest good? Or is the composite okay and *then* it loses sync on the way out?

Thanks for coming back!

So I wasn't able to check the HDMI out because I couldn't find a monitor that could display it (another thing on my 'To Do' list). The ATEM brings in both cameras as a single source, so it comes in to OBS as a single Video Capture Device. The ATEM switches between the cameras and feeds that into OBS (I'm assuming - technical detail isn't my strongpoint, more of the creative). I'm not sure what you mean by composite multiple sources? The ATEM Mini is just a visual mixing desk.

Combine multiple inputs into a single picture. PIP, transitions, etc.

OBS is a compositor too; if you had as many direct inputs to the computer as you're using on the ATEM, then you could do everything in OBS and not need the ATEM. But there's still something to be said for the user interface: it's hard to beat a dedicated set of physical controls.

Yeah the benefit of the ATEM is that it's easy to use as I may end up being the person presenting and also producing the 'programme' so simplicity is key for me. Think I need to test it out again and see if the problem reoccurs. Thanks for the help and advice! :D
