Question / Help Ignore Windows Master Volume on any "desktop audio" source?

Hi,

Is there any way to get OBS to ignore changes to the Windows volume on any/all "desktop audio" sources? Take these two examples:

#1; If I have my headphones plugged directly into the computer, OBS works as I want, no matter what % I have the Windows master volume set to OBS always records it as if it were at 100%, so I can change the sound up/down on my end the stream always sounds the same volume.

#2; If however I plug the headphones into the output on my monitor, OBS audio recording varies depending on what I have the Windows master volume % on. If I decide to mute my headphones or change the volume that change in volume is also reflected on the stream/recording, which I definitely don't want.

Is there a way to get OBS to behave like #1 when I don't have the headphones plugged directly into the computer? Thanks in advance for any help

interesting. in your example #1, I figured that was a bug. I've been trying to figure out how to "correct it" and make windows master volume actually turn down sound in OBS. as it presents issues for me when I want to control levels in an external mixer.
I have a video of my "problem" here.

As far as I know #1 is the intended behaviour, that's how it's always worked in the 6+ years I've used it. It's only since I started plugging my headphones into the monitor that I've started having the problems

As a workaround I've installed my mobo sound drivers and using the "Sound Mixer" virtual device set the audio to output to both my headphones and the main "speakers" (off) device so now it works more like scenario #1, but it's not ideal, there's a slight delay in the audio mirroring and it just sounds a bit off.

If anyone has a better solution I'd appreciate any help

Did you find any better solution to your problem? I have the same issue..

I had this problem on my laptop. The problem is with the Realtek audio drivers. Rolled them back to the one made by Microsoft, works perfectly now.
Explantion:
1) Open device manager.
2) Find "Sound, video and game controllers" and expand it.
3) Find your audio device. In my case it was Realtek(R) Audio
4) Open it and go to driver tab.
5) Click on Roll back driver.
6) If it's not present, I don't know. This was my fix.

I have the same issue, on two of my laptops it is recording at full volume no matter what my windows volume is at. On my new laptop, legion 5 pro, it is recording at Windows volume.

I cannot roll back, it is on realtek driver.

My other laptop also have realtek driver, and OBS is ignoring the Windows volume

Really annoying

I thought OBS was supposed to ignore Windows volume but recently discovered that it doesn't.

I have this issue with every computer I use OBS on, two desktops and a laptop. One is using Nvidia Displayport audio output, one is a Soundblaster USB soundcard, two are Realtek. It doesn't seem to matter what your audio device is. Maybe it's a bug in the current release.

Does anybody have a solution?

This is still happening for me on Windows 11. I tried the suggested driver rollback, but it didn't help. Any ideas?

If you have Realtek audio drivers, this is the fix:

After a lot of poking around and downloading and reinstalling multiple Realtek drivers, I have come to the conclusion that it depends on the version of the Realtek driver you have. If two outputs are shown under "Sounds" in the control panel when headphones or the like are connected, like so:

Then Windows' master volume WILL affect the output volume of your OBS recordings.
But if they are combined even when headphones are connected like so:

Windows' master volume will NOT affect the output levels of your recordings.
The drivers with combined outputs are generally OLDER.

I am currently using the Realtek High Definition Audio, version 6.0.1.8186 (14/06/2017)
I haven't found any other posts mentioning this issue with its proper solution, only workarounds, one person did manage to find out that it was a Realtek audio driver problem but did not elaborate.
Hope this helps.
