Hi everyone,
I’m encountering an issue with OBS Studio where I can’t use H.264 hardware encoding (AMD AMF) with my CPU/GPU setup. I’ve tried several solutions, but OBS either defaults to x264 encoding or displays an error when I select H.264 (AMD AMF).
The problem is that when I use x264 encoding, my games experience significant lag, and the OBS recording/stream often stutters or has frame drops. I’ve attempted to optimize settings, but the performance impact is still too high.
Here are my PC specs:
I’ve tried the following steps:
Despite these efforts, OBS shows errors like "H.264 not supported" or fails to initialize AMD AMF. However, based on AMD documentation, the A8-7600 iGPU should support H.264 hardware encoding via VCE.
If anyone has experience with similar hardware or can suggest a fix, I’d greatly appreciate it. My main goal is to offload encoding to the iGPU to reduce CPU usage during gaming and avoid stuttering.
Thank you for your help!

Here are my PC specs:
- CPU: AMD A8-7600 APU with Radeon R7 Graphics (10 Compute Cores, 4C+6G)
- iGPU: AMD Radeon(TM) R7 Graphics
- GPU: AMD Radeon R7 240 (2GB VRAM)
- RAM: 8GB DDR3 (shared with iGPU)
- Storage: 512GB SSD
- OS: Windows 10 Pro 64-bit (Build 19045)
- OBS Version: 31.0.0 & 27.2.4
I’ve tried the following steps:
- Enabling iGPU in BIOS and ensuring it's active alongside the external GPU.
- Installing the latest drivers for both iGPU and external GPU (currently using driver version 27.20.20913.2000).
- Adding OBS to Windows Graphics Settings and setting it to “Power Saving” to force the iGPU for encoding.
- Testing older versions of OBS (26.x and 24.x) for better compatibility.
