How to monitor the output after the sliders

I seem to be having a problem understanding monitoring channels. I am using ASIO from a USB mixer. I have a number of channels set up as ASIO sources and I can see all the audio sliders in the audio window. My problem is if I mute one of the channels, it is muted in the stream, but I can still hear it in the monitor headphones. What am I missing?

I am using ASIO from a USB mixer.

Can you use that mixer to both produce the final soundtrack to stream, and drive your headphones? OBS, then, has exactly one audio source in total, and it passes through completely unchanged.

That said though, OBS is supposed to do exactly as you want. I wonder if it actually is, but Windows itself is also feeding the raw sources to your headphones, bypassing OBS.
