How to have pre-recorded video playing and overlay slides

I'm new to using OBS studio. The type of projects I plan to make are pre-recorded videos featuring video files I already have and slides. I won't be making livestreamed videos.

I've got a handle on scenes, so that I can create, for example, a scene containing just my pre-recorded video, and then a scene containing a slide, with my video playing in a little box in the corner.

However, when I switch between scenes like this, the video in the second scene starts playing from the beginning again, and this isn't what I want to do. I want to have one long video file playing the whole time, and while this video is playing, I want to keep that audio from the video playing but cut the video to slides, and then back to the video, which is still playing.

Is there a tutorial somewhere on how to do this?

When you insert(ed) your pre-produced video as media source into first scene, there is an checkbox saying something like "start again on (re)activation of the source". This you should uncheck for your purposes.

Another hint is to define this source just once in the first scene where its needed. Then righclick and do "copy". Change over to the next scene, do rightclick in the empty space on sources tab and do "insert (reference)".

So almost any attributes are inherited from the first instance you copied from. Anyway you can arrange the canvas, size and composition for the actual scene as you want.

I rechecked for myself. If it sufficient to follow the second hint. Using copy&insert-by-reference the video plays further during scene changes even if have set the "start-again..." checkbox.

Of course, if you switched meanwhile to a scene that doesn't contain the video at all, then it will replay from start as soon as you change to a scene that consists a referenced copy of that source, again.
