How to connect Panasonic G85 or GX85 to OBS?

First post, so be kind—I have spent the last two hours here searching and reading. Setup:

OBS 29.0.2
Mac OS Big Sur v. 11.7.2

BlackMagic Design UltraStudio Mini Recorder connecting via Thunderbolt, on MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013)

The LUMIX Tether software does not support either of these two cameras, unfortunately.

With OBS open, I cannot see video from either of the Pannys if I connect the HDMI out to the HDMI in on the MBP, and click "Start virtual camera" in OBS.

Similarly, if I connect the HDMI out of the camera to the Mini Recorder, and connect it to the MBP via Thunderbolt, nothing shows when I click "Start virtual camera". I have checked the settings (camera is outputting 1080p/30) and all OBS settings match this.

I have created Scenes that describe each of the setups, and did try to add the Mini Recorder via Sources, but nothing visible in OBS.

It might be that I need an HDMI to USB capture card, but I thought the Mini Recorder would do that. And it might be that I have not set the system up correctly; if there's a tutorial that steps the new user through setting up a new install of OBS, I will be grateful.

I use an Elgato Cam Link 4k with both my G7 and my G95. OBS sees it fine and captures them in good 4K. Runs great on both my Intel and m2pro macs. I connect it to either camera using a cable that is full size hdmi on one end and micro hdmi on the other. I also use the capture stick on windows as well.

I ordered and took delivery of a capture card since posting here, and that worked perfectly. The capture card was the missing piece. Thanks for responding. All good, so I am happy to close this thread.
