How do I rename an SQ11 camera on a Macintosh?

Hello OBS people.

I noticed a side effect of obs. The program relies on the fact that everything in the USB tree has a different name in order to keep track of stuff.

That is good as long as you use different brands of cameras, or if you've used the same brand of camera the cameras renaming program that is either built in or online somewhere.

I have a unique problem that cannot be solved just by changing cameras. I have sq11s which are the only cameras I could find that you could put on the same plane around 1 to 2 in away from each other to make a stereoscopic camera.

Apple always sees these as general UVC cameras.

As late as OS 10.12 for Macintosh there was a feature built into the operating system where if two or more devices in the USB tree had the same name it would put a parentheses and a number in there to differentiate between one and two.

Now as of os 12 and later, if two items have the same USB name they're stuck having the same USB name.

For most cameras the answer is simple just get the program and rename the camera.

But I've been looking on Google for how to rename an sq11 camera. And Google seems to have no clear answer in the first 10 listings and then the topics get way further off base the further down the line you go.

I was looking in the Apple Mac App store for a program that could change the name of a USB camera. I've seen this program that could change everything else but the name the huge saturation all the visual aspects which could be done on OBS anyway but I can't change the name.

The Apple operating system won't let you change the name of the sq-11.

I assume these sq-11s are body cams used on police officers and other stuff to report their perspective. I understand a remote in the network is different than an interior Network connected by USB. But if anyone in the administration of a police department knows how to rename an sq-11 locally on a local USB network, that would be handy.

I'm thinking Security programs might have the ability to rename cameras so that they're not just all called General UVC.

Any other ideas where I could find who makes this camera and how to rename the sq-11 cuz frankly I cannot find any other camera that lets you put two of them side by side. Most cameras are built flat so that they fit in your pocket or something. I need the cube shape so that I can put two of them within one to two inches of each other to make two eyes to make a stereo camera.

Anyone got some other advice like for example can Android rename cameras plugged in somehow or is there an Android program that lets you rename cameras generically? (And yes I know I'm probably in the least populated quadrant of PC / Mac and iOS / Android universe combinarion users.)

Something that can help me get around this something. Can I hook it up to a PC and change it? No I just got to get somebody over to bring a PC and hook up the cameras individually.

I think I got seven different pairs of cameras. And I don't know a friend locally so good luck getting to my cameras

Have the same issue: I use identical cams, one in the office and one in the home office. Each time I switch between them I have to update the configuration. Cams should have an internal ID which could be used?

Should, yes. But cheap stuff often doesn't. Technically, it violates the USB spec to not change the serial number between devices, but no one notices until they have multiples. And it makes them cheaper to crank out of the factory if they really are *exactly* identical.

That isn't the problem. He is asking a leg question about camera metadata to the OS. IE.. two identical model cameras so he wants to name them Cam-01 and Cam-02 so they remain linked in OBS without having to reselect the item.

It kinda is, actually. If the system can't tell the difference and keep them straight, then it can't rename them either and keep *that* straight.

I found out originally as of Mac OS 10.12 and earlier that the OS did have the job to differentiate two different cameras of the same type.

In OS 10.13 and higher the OS intentionally abdicated its role in assigning numbers.

I try asking Apple why they got rid of that and no one could give me a definitive answer.

If the OS doesn't care which of the cameras is which, then it can't differentiate them, which makes it a weaker OS not a stronger OS.

I understand OBS only goes off the USB name but if Apple got lazy and decided not to append the USB name with a temporary digit that sounds like it's Apple's fault.

When something else becomes smart, you're free to become dumb and not have people notice.

And that's what Apple did. And I noticed.
