How do I get OBS to window capture only one screen for recording?

Complete new. My first time using this. I googled and got no actual good info.

I have a laptop that is connected to an external monitor.

When I use window capture OBS detect both monitors and the window ratio and recording is all messed up.

How do I get it to only focus on one screen? I am trying to record a video.

It's not clear what you mean with "window capture ... detect both monitors", because Window capture will capture an application window no matter the monitor. It's also not clear what exactly you mean with "...is all messed up".
Please make yourself familiar with the 3 different capture methods: window capture, display capture and game capture. Use them and observe what they do and how they work.
Also try to describe your issue better with more technical terms. "messed up" isn't a technical term that doesn't describe properly to us what you see. A screenshot with a description what isn't right in that screenshot would help.
