Question / Help How can I get smoother recordings on a system not optimized for gaming?

I have a 3 1/2 year old Dell Mobile Precision model M4700 workstation. It has an Intel Core i7-3740QM CPU running at 2.7 GHz. It has 16 gigabytes of RAM and an Nvidia Quadro K1000M graphics card. It's optimized for engineering rather than gaming, but I do play Zwift and would like to be able to record and/or stream those sessions. I have two 24-inch monitors connected to DVI ports in the docking station. However, I prefer to display Zwift on my 60-inch plasma television which is connected by way of an HDMI-to-USB adapter. I can also connect to the television using my Microsoft Wireless Display Adapter, or a DisplayPort adapter. Currently, I'm using the HDMI-to-USB adapter, because it supports 1080p.

I know I don't have the ideal environment for gaming, but I'd like to configure it to get the best performance possible. Although I haven't seen OBS indicating that it's dropping frames, I have noticed that the frame rate will drop during a recording. I have set Zwift's resolution to the lowest possible setting; 576p. When I recorded a test session recently – one in which I was only observing, not participating – I noticed that the video was recorded at 1280 x 720!? I do not have rescaling enabled in the OBS Studio settings, so I'm not sure why this is happening. However, the adapter settings for the television on which I'm running Zwift is set at a resolution of 1080p. Should I change the resolution of that display so it matches the resolution of the game, or does that matter?

My primary concern is that the resulting video I get is jerky – this despite the fact that no dropped frames are being reported. I'm assuming that the drop in frame rate is the culprit. Am I correct? I can't help but notice that the frame rate drops whenever I click on another application that's running on the desktop – particularly when I click on the game. As soon as I click on OBS again, the frame rate jumps right back up to 30 FPS.

Can you upload a logfile after you have recorded some game play:

With a current logfile post-game play recorded, should be able to figure out just what the issue is. Your Quadro card should be able to handle 1080p game and recording resolution. Your CPU should also not have much issue handling the same.

Happy to see another cyclist on the forums! Though I can't at present due to no bike :(

From this guide:
https://obsproject.com/forum/resour...lity-recording-and-multiple-audio-tracks.221/

Use simple settings
Recording Quality Indistinguishable
Encoder NVENC
Format FLV

Your video settings are
Canvas 1920x1080 (your monitor)
Output 1280x720
Dowscale filter Bicubic
FPS 30

This is why you record on 720p

If you capture a 576p game you can transform in two ways:
Fit to screen ..... right click on source ...transform....fit to screen (CTRL+F keyboard shortcut) that will enlarge it to max size in your canvas (1080p)
Stretch to screen ..... right click on source ...transform....stretch to screen (CTRL+s keyboard shortcut) that will strecth it to cover all canvas

First case you will get bad image due to upscaling; second due to upscaling and deformation.

You can use an overlay around game and capture it at its natural resoluton.
You will have size for your webcam, stream chat, alerts, etc.....
