Question / Help High Quality Local Recording - 2019

Hi All,

I had posted this as part of a related question but realized I should separate it to it’s own thread. I’m doing local recording of one-on-one interviews for my podcast. I had seen settings when I started that I still use and that record great (listed below) but I’m wondering what some updated settings might be.

Some Reference Info:

Base and Output 1920 x 1080
30 fps
NV12
Color Space 709
Color Range Partial

My recording settings are:

Encoder: x264
Rate Control: CBR
Bitrate: 35000 Kbps
CPU Usage: VeryFast
Profile: Main
Tune: None

I saw this old post from 2015 and wondered if maybe using these settings would be better, or even if they are still the best choices in 2019.

https://obsproject.com/forum/resour...lity-recording-and-multiple-audio-tracks.221/

Rate Control: CRF
CRF: 15-25
CPU Usage: Superfast or Ultrafast

Any thoughts are very much appreciated.
Thanks

If you're not doing multichannel audio, the usual best local recording settings are simple output, indistinguishable quality, large file size.

CBR is primarily for streaming, not recording. Using it for recording results in larger files without better quality.

If you must use advanced mode (because of multichannel audio) then CRF 15 super or ultra (whichever your CPU can hold) is a good choice. Increase the CRF if you're already at ultrafast and still get encoding lag.

Thank you!

I am using multi-channel audio, and therefore Advanced Mode. I’m using Very Fast now with CBR, so I’m guessing CRF at 15 and Super should be fine. Any tips on what to look for in choosing super vs ultra, meaning what should I watch out for?

That helps a lot, so thanks again.
