Question / Help High CPU/RAM Usage

Hello,

Recently I've been running into some issues when streaming games (more specifically Resident Evil 7 and Overwatch) using OBS Studio. My CPU and RAM goes all the way up to 100%, both the OBS and the game using most of the cpu.

PC Specs:
  • Intel Core i7-4770 3.4 GHz Quad-Core Processor
  • Noctua NH-D14 65.0 CFM CPU Cooler
  • Gigabyte GA-Z97X-Gaming 5 ATX LGA1150 Motherboard
  • G. Skill Ripjaws X series 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3-1866
  • Samsung 850 EVO-Series 1TB 2.5' SSD
  • MSI GeForce GTX 970 4GB Twin Frozr V Video Card
  • Corsair RM 850W 80+ ATX Power Supply
  • Capture Card: Elgato HD60 Pro
  • Edit: I'm using Windows 10 as the OS
Stream Settings:

Output:
  • Rescale Output: 1280x720
  • Encoder: x264
  • Rate Control: CBR
  • Bitrate: 2500
  • CPU Preset: Very Fast
  • Profile: Main
  • Tune: none
Audio:
  • Sample Rate: 48khz
  • Channels: Stereo
Video:
  • Base Resolution: 1920x1080
  • Output Resolution: 1280x720
  • Downscale Filter: Bicubic (Sharpened scaling, 16 samples)
  • FPS: 30
Advanced:
  • Renderer: Direct3D 11
  • Color Format: NV12
  • YUV Color Space: 601
  • YUV Color Range: Partial
I've never had any issues with these settings until recently. I tried everything that I have found online from my Logitech c920 drivers, updating drivers for cpu as well as other things and adjusting settings to my startup programs and nothing changes.

This is the log file from OBS Studio from February 7, 2017 when I was streaming and after an hour of streaming my game froze as well as my PC and then it crashed. https://gist.github.com/anonymous/c8e2bb25a693c622e25c4e55916b7d43

I would really appreciate all the help that I get. I was thinking about even buying a new CPU and new RAM but I was told to try the forums first. Thank you all in advance who reply! <3

Hi,

checking the log it has the following

17:54:47.632: Output 'adv_stream': Number of skipped frames due to encoding lag: 49 (0.0%)
17:54:47.632: Output 'adv_stream': Number of lagged frames due to rendering lag/stalls: 306 (0.3%)
17:54:47.632: Output 'adv_stream': Number of dropped frames due to insufficient bandwidth/connection stalls: 521 (0.5%)

nothing here is omgzomg crazy drops given the total

17:54:47.632: Output 'adv_stream': Total encoded frames: 113491
17:54:47.632: Output 'adv_stream': Total drawn frames: 113491

but all these add to the lag. If your cpu is maxed then drop the cpu preset from veryfast to superfast.

depending when it started and if you have changed any settings e.g. was it fine before v0.17 came out roll back to v0.16.6 see if you have any issues as for me personally i've seen some increase in load on v0.17.2, though people wont support that version as its now outdated.

Rez 7 has only just been released so worth thinking if overwatch was ok before etc and re test it, if its still the same re upgrade to 0.17 and posts the log.

Sorry for the thread cleanup. Let's keep things on topic :)

@Beardedbob's advice there should hopefully get your going in the right direction.

RE7 is a very new game, and as it's just a console port, it's not very well optimized for PC, so it's putting a heavy load on your system compared to other games.

Oh that's ok! ^_^
Thank you for replying.

I will try that today after getting home from work. But how do I rollback the version for obs studio? I have no idea how I would do that.

I'd leave that as a last resort. Try the other advice first, and see if you can enable vsync or a similar frame limiter within the game itself to make sure it's not eating all your system resources. The lagged frames in your log generally indicate a GPU overload of some kind, which is likely give the game and your GPU.

This helped a lot! I wouldn't have guessed that the FPS could use up so much of my resources, shows how little I know about computers lol. This seemed to fix the issues. Thank you all who replied and suggested fixes! <3

You rescale on video settings. Leave output settings rescale unchecked. This double rescaling causes lag.
