Question / Help Help with settings/upgrades for webcam capture

Hi all,

I'm using OBS to remotely capture a fitness class about 1-2 times weekly. I have a Logitech BRIO connected to a 2012 Mac Mini (I think it has something like 2.6ghz processor and no gpu) I have remote desktop installed and I control the operation from my office in a different location. The video quality is very choppy, and usually gets around 30fps but doesn't look fluid at all. The file records into a dropbox folder where the editor is able to access it.

I was hoping someone could guide me on what settings to check in OBS or what single piece of hardware might offer the biggest quality upgrade for us? (budget is tight so I can't go crazy buying equipment)

Thank you in advance for any help!
I'm more than happy to share my current settings although they're mostly default.

Run the Auto Configuration Wizard from the Tools menu.

If necessary reduce your canvas resolution, possibly as low as 720p.

Sooooo I ran the auto config, it adjusted the settings, but the output is now 640x360, which isn't really tenable. Any suggestions on a hardware upgrade I should make?

Do you have the Logitech Camera settings app installed on macOS? For webcams the usual caveat is that high frame rates are dependent on good lighting conditions, not running at "full" resolution and the webcam not "deciding" by itself to engage Logitech's "RightLight" tech, which increases brightness at the cost of frame rate (as the sensor waits for more light to reach it).

I wouldn't be surprised if the BRIO requires good lighting and needs to be set to 1080p resolution (it can't do 4k30).

If the CPU will be able to encode 1080p60 is another question though - x264 probably has to be at least "veryfast" and I'd also set the bitrate or quality rating high enough to keep those 60fps without chopping it up too badly (if bitrate is too low 60fps will look worse than 30fps).

That machine can probably encode 720p30. 1080p60 is questionable. Try veryfast, but go to superfast or ultrafast if needed.
