Help recording and editing audio? Basics, but I can't figure it out.

Hi,
I record audio from my microsoft laptop with OBS. I still have a hard time with the display, as in I do not know how to select files to work on, etc.
I would like to edit the audio files. Unfortunately, they are Mkv4, but whatever. Mainly, I want to cut out irrelevant background noise.
How do I do this?
Would another program be better?

OBS isn't a video editor. It is only for recording/streaming.

Shotcut will do what you want: separate audio from video and you can remove the parts of the audio that you don't want. A great software video editor.
