Question / Help HDMI Capture on OS X

Hi everyone,

New streamer here. Using OBS 0.12.4 on OS X 10.11.2.

Specs of my Mac:
  • Model: MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Early 2015)
  • Processor: 2.9 GHz Intel Core i5
  • RAM: 16 GB 1867 MHz DDR3
I just bought an Elgato Game Capture HD60 to stream my gameplay from my Wii U. Well, I might as well just say I threw 150$ in the fire.

I didn't know Elgato just didn't feel like providing drivers for the Mac. I cannot use their device as a "video capture device" anywhere, which is apparently doable in Windows. I have to use their software to get the framerate up to 60 FPS. No matter what trick I try (tutorials found on YouTube, etc.), the best I can do in OBS is about 2 FPS. It's ridiculous.

Can anyone suggest an actual HDMI capture device usable on the Mac as a video capture device in any app and in OBS?

After some research, I'm thinking of going with the Blackmagic Design UltraStudio Mini Recorder. It seems to work well on Macs as a capture device in any application like I was using a webcam.

I'm also in the process of obtaining a refund for my Elgato Game Capture HD60.

If you have any other suggestions before I purchase the above, I'm all ears.

The UltraStudio works very well, I've used it with my MB Pro with no problems. My MB Pro is much older, Late 2011 with only 4G ram.
