hd60x/obs on osx catalina

I just got an hd60x and obs studio 29.0.2 on my mac mini with 10.15 (catalina); I get audio, and the video showed the elgato logo at the beginning but it is not showing content, though the monitor hooked up to the hdmi output is showing it. Now the preview window is just black (after replugging cables and restarting obs)

I also note that it seems to think it's recording (the red light is blinking) even though obs is not running (nor are any other apps that would use video) and I power cycled the elgato...

I note that effectively the same things happens when I move the setup to ubuntu 22.04 (it's gray instead of black)
