Well, if you don't have a receiver, or don't have 7 speakers connected to your PC, you don't have 7.1. Your surround headphones are not 7.1, they are virtual 7.1.
They take a 5.1/7.1 signal and use delays and reverb to position each channel of audio in virtual field around you, converting it into a 2.0 signal that simulates surround sound. If you have 2 speakers, it's not surround sound.
