Question / Help Hardware vs software encoding for 4K streaming

I currently use a DeckLink 4K capture card and a 2016 MacBook Pro to live stream on YouTube in 4K. The Apple VT H.264 Hardware Encoder (Intel Quick Sync) is great, except that it doesn't support CBR. Occasionally the bitrate varies so much that YouTube drops all frames and I have to restart the stream. The MacBook Pro's CPU (6920HQ) can't handle x264 encoding in 4K unless I use the "ultrafast" preset, which looks much worse than Quick Sync.

Fortunately, I have access to a 2013 Mac Pro. If I upgrade the CPU in the trash can to a 12 core E5-2697 v2, would it be able to handle the x264 "faster" preset?

Thanks!
