Question / Help Hardware encoding on MacBook Pro 15-inch 2018 with Vega 20?

Hello,

I have a 15-inch MacBook Pro 2018 model containing:

* Intel Core i7 with Intel UHD Graphics 630
* AMD Radeon Pro Vega 20
* Apple T2 chip

All of the above should, at least in theory, offer hardware assisted video encoding.

Might there be a way to get some sort of hardware encoding going in OBS with that machine?

Thanks,
Roy

There's no support for VCE in OBS under MacOS, so no way to use the AMD card.

You should see an option for "Apple VT H264 Hardware Encoder" which is the equivalent of QuickSync.

No, there is no option for the Apple VT H264 Hardware Encoder. Could be related to the hardware (like the presence of a T2 or Vega) or the version of MacOS (some sources suggest the option disappeared with the 10.14.3 update).

QuickSync is using the built-in capabilities of an Intel processor, so shouldn't be affected by the presence of a Vega card. Don't know about machines either with or without a T2 chip. A machine with an Intel processor that has no built-in graphics, like the Xeon processors of old cheese grater Mac Pros, also don't have access to this because those chips don't have GPUs in them.

I have the same MacBook Pro as you ... and I have that option in OBS. You sure you looking at encoder?
There’s APPLE VT h264 hardware
Apple Vt h264 software
And x264

I get x264 is cpu .... the cpu goes on full black when using this. But only 6 votes
I also assume h264 software is quicksync? This ramps up all 12 cores ...
I’m betting it’s a custom qsv ... Apple junk. Cause they would call it qsv if it was true quicksync

And then ... I ASSUMED hardware was h264 on the amd chip .... cause the APU Spins up. Plus the cpu stays low.
Not to mention this method requires more bitrate

Hey, I have the same computer and I am always dealing with render lag. Do you have any suggestions? Also, what do you mean by "requires more bitrate"
