Take a logfile with a session you created in simple mode/indistinguishable settings and scroll to the entries that correspond to the session start. You will see the actual encoder settings OBS was using in this mode.

From your logfile:
16:36:38.402: [jim-nvenc: 'simple_h264_recording'] settings: 16:36:38.402: rate_control: CQP 16:36:38.402: bitrate: 0 16:36:38.402: cqp: 16 16:36:38.402: keyint: 250 16:36:38.402: preset: hq 16:36:38.402: profile: high 16:36:38.402: width: 1920 16:36:38.402: height: 1080 16:36:38.402: 2-pass: false 16:36:38.402: b-frames: 2 16:36:38.402: lookahead: false 16:36:38.402: psycho_aq: true
How it should look like if you copy this to advanced recording mode:

Thanks! Turns out that simple was recording to C and advanced was recording to an external drive on USB 2.0.
