grcp server inside OBS Studio Python script

I'm having trouble running a grpc server that's part of a python script run within OBS studio. The server starts fine when run as a standalone Python script, but when loaded within OBS Studio the grpc port does not open nor do any print statements show up in the script log. Is this shortcoming of OBS studio? Should I write it as a plugin instead?
